Chapter Five – Lily

The first message from Yasmin made her phone vibrate. “You realize you’re stuck with an incredibly hot lion dude, right? For the entire day? Girl, you better make that a day to remember.”

“I don’t want to be creepy to the person who rescued me,” she texted back. “Plus, I don’t want to make things weird while we’re stuck here in a locked house for at least another day. We can’t get dug out until tomorrow and even then, who knows what time of the day it’ll be?” God forbid another blizzard comes up.

In the group chat, Audrey then texted with, “Maybe we should make our next Valentine’s Day trip a little more low-key next year?”

Lily laughed at that, which drew Morgan’s attention from the kitchen. He smiled absently in the way people did when they saw others smiling. “How’s the contact with that sister of yours? Kerry?”

“She finally responded after two hours.” He leaned against the kitchen counter and she couldn’t help but note his profile, how muscular and well-built he was. And those eyes. Those damn eyes that looked like they could pierce through the coldest night of winter. “She says she’ll be looking into a witch that’s in contact with our family.” He pursed his lips then, looking tense. “But she is worried. They’ve been checking in with everyone from our family to make sure we’re all accounted for. But Richard – one of my older brothers – he’s not answering his phone. And his wife doesn’t know where he is.”

She sensed dread and anxiety from Morgan. “You’re worried something might have happened to him?”

“The worst thing is we can’t all check because most of us are snowed in and our ways out are extremely limited. Hopefully, all that’s happened is he got himself drunk somewhere and is crashing at a friend’s place.”

“He’d go out drinking on Valentine’s Day without his wife?”

“Yeah, unfortunately. He tries to escape the kids a lot because they’re noisy and annoying. All three of them.”

Wow. It sounded like he was following in the family’s footsteps all right. She had to nod a little from that news. “Do you think he’s okay?”

“I can only hope at this point,” he said. “I have no way to know for certain if he’s actually okay. It makes me uncomfortable, knowing that you encountered something yesterday though. Something that matches the murders we’ve been trying to track down.”

That made sense. She understood, of course, that he’d be nervous as hell about the matter. She tried straining her memory, trying to think if she’d gotten a glimpse at whatever the creature was that had chased her. But her thoughts yielded nothing but snow and a spinning world and the pounding of her heart as it burned in panic. Nothing else. She hadn’t seen anything else that could help Morgan with his investigation.

So, they fluttered between board games and questions. Digging into each other’s past, trying to figure each other out. He seemed willing to ask more personal questions, which in turn made her more willing to do the same.
